Mission Statement

Cosmic Otter Productions is a Black- and women-owned independent film company dedicated to bold, left-of-center storytelling. We champion artistic integrity, complex narratives, and underrepresented voices, creating films that challenge, entertain, and endure.

In an industry that often prioritizes the safe and familiar, we carve out space for stories that don’t fit neatly into the mainstream—stories that embrace nuance, depth, and the beautifully messy realities of the world. With experience in both independent and studio filmmaking, we understand the challenges artists face in bringing uncompromising work to life—and we know what it takes to succeed.

Investing in Cosmic Otter means more than supporting groundbreaking storytelling. It’s an investment in diverse voices, skilled craftspeople, and local economies. A significant portion of our production budget goes directly into communities, hiring artists, supporting small businesses, and fostering a more sustainable, artist-driven film industry.

At Cosmic Otter, we believe independent filmmaking isn’t just essential—it’s a force for cultural and economic impact, proving that great stories, told authentically, can shape the future of entertainment.

Keep. Movies. Weird.

Philipp Yaw and Priya Jane are a husband and wife Creative Duo from Los Angeles, CA.

They created Cosmic Otter Productions with the sole purpose of following their curiosity wherever it leads them as they collectively write, direct and produce bonkers shit.

Their debut short film, Rudeboy's Restaurant, was funded by Ghetto Film School, Vimeo, and Dolby Labs through the 2019 Emerge! Filmmaker Lab

Their follow up, Cary in Retrograde, a musical dramedy went on to win the jury award for episodic at the Austin, Nashville and Buffalo Film Festival.
